For shorter queues go midweek or if for a weekend try to get there on the Friday so you can fit all the long queue rides in that afternoon when there are fewer people around. (Take a packed lunch on the train for extra time in the park). There are generally longest queues for the thrill rides plus for example Peter Pan's flight and the Pirates of the Caribbean
On the Saturday or Sunday there will be shorter queues over the lunch period so either eat early or late and take rides then to minimise queuing.
Getting up early will mean shorter queues on the Saturday and Sunday, and staying at the Disney properties will generally give you half an hour's head start, though this is not guaranteed and the park may remain shut to everyone until the official opening time if, say, there has been a frost and grit needs to be laid.
Take wet and warm gear (the former useful also for splashy rides).
If your kids are likely to want to try the scare rides, check in advance that they are tall enough. For Indiana Jones and Space Mountain for example you have to be over 1.40m (4' 6”), for Big Thunder 1.02m (3' 5”).
Even the Snow White ride is not suitable for children of impressionable age, so you may have to take a little care over what you choose to take them on. For little ones Fantasyland is the main area of attraction although the imagineers have made an effort to include a gentle option in each of the different sections.
There is a Pocahontas, Indian village safe play area in Frontierland, and a Captain Hook play area in Adventureland.
Shows and daily parades offer chances to see the characters, or much recommended by some parents are Breakfast with Disney Characters is €15 per adult, €12 per child 3-11. These take place at the Disneyland Hotel for those staying there, at the Hotel New York for those staying in one of the other hotels, or Disney village, and at Davy Crockett Ranch for those staying there. A Tea Party with Disney Characters in the park is £6 per person.
