Buses are the commonest public transport though most lines do not run on the Sabbath (Friday evening to Saturday evening) and Jewish holidays.
Urban taxis operate to fixed fares. Between cities there are shared taxis (sherut) at fixed prices per passenger.

There is a rail service from Tel Aviv north and south along the coast and inland to Jerusalem. Trains do not run on the Sabbath.

Car hire is a good way to see the Negev and Upper Galilee. Under 14s must sit in the back and under 4s in a suitable car seat.

If you would prefer accompanied tours half and full days are bookable through hotels, though with children the flexibility of a private taxi might be preferable.

Loose cotton clothes are the most suitable for summer. In winter be prepared for wet and cold.
Note that at religious sites clothes covering arms and legs may be required for children as well as adults. Women need long sleeved dresses in Muslim and Orthodox Jewish areas.
